Shop With a Cop/Firefighter

Posted On: Dec 02, 2009 (00:54:37)

On December 5, 2009 Zion Professional Firefighters IAFF Local 1999 in conjunction with the Zion Police Association and Wal-Mart of Zion will be providing an early Christmas for families in need.  For the first time in Zion, firefighters will join police officers in helping area children shop for Christmas presents for themselves and their family in the Shop with a Cop/Firefighter program.  The kids selected by their area grade schools will meet police and fire personnel at the Zion Police Station where they will have a pizza lunch and then head out to Wal-Mart of Zion to shop for Christmas presents.  At the conclusion of the event, everyone will return to the Police Station where the gifts purchased will be wrapped and returned to the kids to put under the tree at their homes.  Local 1999 is proud to join with the Zion Police Association in this endeavor to help area families in need at this time of year.

Fallen Firefighter Memorial 2009

Posted On: Sep 30, 2009 (12:38:54)

Saturday, September 19th was a day to remember one of our own.  Six members of IAFF Local 1999 travelled with the family of (Ret) Lt Robert Guerin to the Fallen Firefighters Memorial in Colorado Springs to witness the dedication of Lt Guerin to the Wall of Honor.  Bobby Guerin passed away in August of 2008 after a hard fought battle with cancer.

The memorial service was an eye opening experience.  Colorado Springs Firefighters IAFF Local 5 did an outstanding job hosting this event.  Zion Firefighters in attendance included Lt/PM Mark Klamut, Lt/PM Justin Stried, FF/PM Rick Reich, FF/PM Dan Reich, FF/PM Dane Costello, and FF/PM Eric Pursche.  The family of Bobby Guerin was also present for the event.  His wife Bridget Guerin, son Ross, and daughter Allison were present for the dedication.

The Guerin family including Zion Professional Firefighters IAFF Local 1999 remember Bobby through the establishment of the Robert K. Guerin Memorial Scholarship Fund to assist local high school students looking to continue their education in the fields of EMS and Fire Science.

Fill the Boot 2009

Posted On: Jul 25, 2009 (21:36:18)

Zion Professional Firefighters IAFF Local 1999 would like to thank everyone who travelled along Sheridan road on Friday July 17th and donated for our 2009 MDA Fill the Boot fundraiser.  This year's fundraiser yielded a record take of $3,700 to be donated to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Special thanks must be given to all who helped make this possible.  First and foremost to the citizens of Zion and all those travelling through who donated money to this worthy cause.  Also to the Zion Fire and Rescue Department and Chief John Lewis who allowed the use of department vehicles and personnel.  The Zion Public Works who provided and set up electronic signs to tell travellers of the Fill the Boot.  Commisioner Frank Flammini and his wife who provided the use of their bookstore to store equipment during the event.  And finally to the City of Zion who supported Local 1999 in their efforts to raise money for MDA.

Thanks again to everyone involved.  We look forward to another successful Fill the Boot in 2010.
